Professor D T Sharpe, OBE MA Bchir FRCS Professor Sharpe studied at Cambridge University and Oxford Medical School, Oxford University. He began his career at The Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford and then worked in Bath, Chepstow and Glasgow before moving to Leeds and Bradford as senior registrar in plastic surgery in 1980. He has been working as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon in the National Health Service since 1985 and he is Consultant Plastic Surgeon for Bradford Hospitals NHS Trust. In addition to his National Health Service commitments, Professor Sharpe has also been in private practice in West Yorkshire and London since 1985. He is on the GMC's specialist register for Plastic Surgery and is Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the Director of Plastic Surgery and Burns Research Unit at the University of Bradford. He was awarded the OBE in 1986 for recognition of his work in the aftermath of the Bradford City fire disaster and in 1988 he received the British Design Award and was also winner of the Prince of Wales Award for Innovation and Production that year. In 2005 Professor Sharpe set up The Lodge which is an independent clinic specialising in Cosmetic Plastic Surgery and Dental Surgery, non-invasive procedures and aspects of beauty therapy. Professional Bodies Professor Sharpe is a member of many recognised Professional Bodies. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He is a member of the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgeons (formerly BAPS)and the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS). He held the Presidency of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons from 1996-1998 and was the Founder Chairman of the Breast Special Interest Group of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons. Professor Sharpe is frequently asked to be the representative on various national and international groups. He is a member of the Advisory Committee on The Safety of Breast Implants to the Department of Health and was on the Specialist Advisory Committee on Plastic Surgery Training. Professor Sharpe represents Plastic Surgery on the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency and is the BAAPS and BAPS' representative on the British Standards Institute Committee of Non-active Surgical Implants. He is the National Representative of the European Committee on Quality Assurance and Medical Devices in Plastic Surgery. Research Interests Professor Sharpe undertakes a large amount of research in areas such as Tissue Expansion, Breast Surgery, Breast Reconstruction, Burns and Wound Healing. Editorial Activities Professor Sharpe is a reviewer for the following journals: The British Journal of Plastic Surgery, The Lancet, The Breast, Facial Plastic Surgery and Saudi Medical Journal Educational Activities Professor Sharpe's educational activities include being a founder member of the MERIT Centre at Bradford Hospitals NHS Trust which supports innovative surgical research. He regularly performs operative demonstrations on breast reconstruction and has organised breast reconstruction courses. Professor Sharpe has been a Faculty member at many international meetings. He is an Advisor on Plastic Surgery Aspects of Reconstruction for Breast Cancer Care. Professor Sharpe is a regular lecturer and medical demonstrator. During his career, Professor Sharpe has lectured at over 150 medical national meetings and written over 70 publications for medical journals. Professor Sharpe enjoys oil painting and holds a private pilots licence. He is a member of the British Helicopter Advisory Board.
